This is probably one of the most symbolic and complex designs on a fountain pen. Inspired in Paulo Coelho’s novel, Montegrappa offers a limited edition fountain pen which collects the elements and cosmology of Alchemy. Once a powerful science, combining physics, philosophy and metaphysics, nowadays Alchemy has a mysterious and almost magical aura. Alchemists sought to discover and manipulate the forces that formed the universe, and developed a series of rules and principles that explained the Cosmos. The Montegrappa Alchemist Fountain Pen is the result of these concepts put together in a writing instrument.
The four elements that, in combination, produced everything that exists in our world were supposed to be Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Four models, limited to 125 units each, of this fountain pen in Sterling Silver are offered: one for each natural element. The Montegrappa Alchemist Fire fountain pen is finished in Sterling Silver and red enamel. The entire pen is a representation of the alchemists’ universe. The central ring, on which you can see a golden sun and moon represents the separation of the sub-lunar world and the supra-lunar world which was first formulated by Aristotle. On the cap, which corresponds to the sub-lunar world we can see the space that each element naturally occupies. The Earth in the bottom, and center of the universe, and water, air and fire in ascending order.
On the pen’s body we find the seven rings which correspond to the seven planets known in that time. Each planet relates to a specific metal which defines the process followed by alchemists’. On an ascending pyramid we find small plates of each one of these metals. The pyramid ends in a red enamel triangle that represents God as the culmination of the universe and furthermost realm of the cosmos. A red pyramid goes in the opposite direction, and is made of red enamel. This represents the light of knowledge that comes from God straight to the earth. Light and knowledge were symbolically united in the middle ages.
As you can see, the sophisticated design of the Montegrappa Alchemist Fountain Pen is full of meaning and intention. The 18 K rhodium plated nib has a peacock engraved on it. This animal was especially significant for alchemists. It’s feathers were used to represent the Cosmos illuminated by the sun and the transformation of metals in the alchemical process. This incredible pen comes in an also incredible presentation box in the form of a pyramid, a symbol of ancient lore also used in Paulo Coelho’s novel. The Pyramid box is divided in layers which match the elements and planets of the solar system. Inside you will find the pen and a crystal ball on a soft cushion.
These fountain pens are also available in high-quality resin and, for those more exquisite collectors, in solid gold. The Montegrappa Alchemist Fountain Pen is a limited edition writing instrument that captures the dedications and exclusiveness of Montegrappa pens.
